M83's I Wrote You A Letter arrives 25 years after Anthony Gonzalez's debut under the M83 name, and that long view matters: this is the project's 10th studio album, recorded between Los Angeles and Paris and released in 2026 after 2023's Fantasy. The scale is unmistakably M83, but the story here is less about reinvention than refinement, with Gonzalez returning to the widescreen electronic approach that made the project such a defining crossover between dream pop, shoegaze and synth-led cinema.
What gives this record its pull is how confidently it balances atmosphere with songcraft. The source material points again and again to soaring melodies, sharp hooks and a more modern palette, while early coverage places it in dialogue with earlier M83 records rather than treating it as a nostalgic retread. That makes sense for an artist whose catalogue stretches from cult electronic beginnings to the era-defining reach of Midnight City, and whose music has long travelled easily between albums, festival stages, film and television.
There are a few especially useful details for longtime listeners. Benoit de Villeneuve is back as a collaborator, Bill Henson created the artwork, and the tracklist suggests a compact, focused set rather than an overextended sprawl. If you come to M83 for emotional lift, dense synth colour and that feeling of pop music blown up to cinematic size, I Wrote You A Letter sounds built to deliver exactly that.
